A n th o n y Dion Pitre Les Fem m es has chosen 22 high school seniors, to be presented in their 40th Annual Debutante and Cavalier Ball, “ A Touch O f E legance.” Dedicated to improving the lives o f A frican-A m erican youth, while pre paring them for life after high school is one goal o f Les Femmes. The Portland based organization o f women has de veloped a strict code o f ethics and rig orous curriculum for the young people to follow. To reward the participants for fol lowing the ethics code and curriculum , each senior who demonstrates academic success and service to the com m unity will be honored in the formal ball on Sunday, June 23 at 8 pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Oregon Convention Center. Each week through June, Les Femmes and the Portland O bserver will feature three young people who were C arolyn R o s e Y o u n g chosen as 1991 debutantes and cava liers. This week m eet Rick Dale M ullings, A nthony Dion Pitre and Carolyn Rose Young. Mullings, the son of Dorothy Lewis, is a senior at Benson High School. At Benson M ullings is a four year letter- man on the tennis team. He served as captain his senior year. M ullings bal anced sports and com m unity service by being active in Brothers Gaining Equal ity and speaking to 8th graders about the transition from middle school to high school. A spiring for a marketing career, M ullings will attend Oregon State University this Fall and major in business administration. Pitre, the son o f Arnold and Judith Pitre, is a senior at M ountain View High School in Vancouver, W A. At Mountain View Pitre played varsity baseball and basketball. In addition to excelling in sports, Pitre takes time to R ick D ale M ullings participate with the W ashington Teen Institute and Students Gaining Equal ity. Pitre is a m ember o f Ainsworth United Church o f Christ and is active with their youth organization. He is unsure of which college he will attend, but Pitre will use his talents and pursue studies in graphic and fine arts. Young, the daughter of L.C. and Rachel Young, is a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School. At Jefferson Young was active in the Financial Serv ices Academy, Close-Up, softball and soccer. She also attended Upward Bound for two years. Young has been recog nized for her GPA achievem ent and contributions to the Academy; yet she still finds time to work with SG E and volunteer for the Urban League of Portland.
